In 1948 shortly after leaving the Army Air Core, a young FM Cartret using his skills obtained during the Second World War established a land clearing and excavation business. Being a large property owner he was often called upon to post bonds for a rough and rowdy brother as well as employees and neighbors that sometimes found themselves in unfortunate circumstances. At that time there was no licensing procedure for the professional bail bondsman. FM Cartret went on to establish one of North Carolina's first commercial house moving operations. He was a founding member of the NC House Mover's Association.
In 1971 William "Bruce Sellers, a distant cousin of FM Cartret began writing bonds commercially as William B. Sllers Surety, later to become Sellers Bail Bonds.
"Bruce" as he was called became known throughout Columbus County and the United States and as far away as the border towns of Mexico for always getting his man, or woman as the case might be. Bruce once bragged that he had travelled as far away as Florida to pick up a skip "for a one hundred dollar bond!" Along with his derby hat as a trademark, he was known to be pretty handy with his Smith and Wesson. 38 special airweight. Bruce told about spending many hours in front of a mirror practicing his quick draw, earning him his lightening fast speed as well as the reputation of the "fastest gun around." Among many legacies which he left behind, Bruce became the largest professional bondsman in the state of North Carolina.
In 1998 shortly before his passing, Bruce sold the business to Randy Mckeithan. "Big Randy" was known for having a heart larger than Texas as he was found to help many a person in need. Randy oversaw "Sellers Bail Bonding" until his death in Janurary of 2003.
In Feburary of 2003, Mark Cartret, a bail bondsman and grandson of FM Cartret was retained by the Estate of Randy Mckeithan to handle any and all affairs related to closing out the Estate of the late bondsman. Shortly thereafter, Mark purchased Sellers Bail Bonding and its holdings. The 32 year old bonding operation was once again back in family.
In March of 2003, Mark Cartret was awarded "2003 Businessman Of The Year" by the National Republican Congressional Committee's "Business Advisory Council." Mark subsequently appeared in the March 19, 2003 edition of the Wall Street Journal.
Highly active in the political workings on the bail industry at the state level, Mark is a member of numerous civic groups and organizations. After nearly 10 years as a board member and after serving 2 terms as vice president of the North Carolina Bail Agents Association, he was most recently elected by acclamation to the office of president.
In 2005 while working towards completion of his MBA, Mark published his thesis " An Exploration of the Efficacy of the Private Bail Bond System In the United States," from the point of view of a North Carolina Bail Bondsman.
Mark, a long time pilot, is a Life Member of the National Rifle Association, the NRA's Institute For Legislative Action and the United States Air Force Auxillary, Civil Air Patrol Division. Mark Catret was one of the first bail bondsmen to utilize electronic monitoring as an additional tool for those his company had released on bond.
In June of 2008 his monitoring program was responsible for the arrest and apprehension of James Binson Briggs. Mr. Biggs, a felony fugitive who had absconded during a kidnapping and armed robbery trial had been found guilty in abstentia by a Columbus County jury. Sellers Bail Bonding, LLC would be formed in September of this same year.
Mark currently serves as the Executive Director of "NCEMA", the non profit North Carolina Electronic Monitoring Association. Upon Mark stepping down as CEO in January of 2010, Annamaria Cartret assumed the role as president of the company. Annamaria, a social worker and graduate of Babes-Bolyai School of Law "will bring a valuable and differing direction of leadership to the family's business," according to Mark Cartret.
Although it has been called several different names under similar variations, Sellers Bail Bonding remains today as it began over 4 decades ago-a family owned operation.
Since the earlier days of its larger than life founder and times when there was little or no regulation, Sellers Bail Bonding along with its unparalleled committment to the industry remains virtually the same.
As a managing general agency, the company is involved in both the retail and wholesale side of underwriting bail. The Sellers name is synonymous with bail in North Carolina. The Sellers professionalism is unmatched anywhere while its committment to the client or the agent is among the highest judged by the industry's standards.
